Memory, a code inside fashion

"In thinking of clothes as passing fashions, we repeat less than half-truth. Bodies come and go; the clothes which have received those bodies survive. They circulate though secondhand shops, through rummage sales, through the Salvation Army; or they are transmitted from parent to child, from sister to sister, from brother to brother, from sister to brother, from lover to lover, from friend to friend." (Peter Stallybrass, “Worn Worlds: Clothes, Mourning, and the Life of Things” The Yale Review 1993 vol. 81. no. 2, pp. 35-50)
  • Some old fashion styles, like vintage, 60s, 70s and 80s, give us a special feeling, recall us the memories of the good old times and some precious personal experiences. No matter whether you have been lived in the period, if you are interested in the history - fashion is the best way to capture the past zeitgeist.
  • Fashion is a cycle. The old memories of fashion will be transformed in a brand new way in the future, while memory itself is growing too. People who were born in 80s becomes the mainstream in nowadays society, they bring their 80s childhood memories back to 21st century life.
  • Fashion and memory are both personal experiences. Memory is closely related with personal life trace, especially in one’s early years; memory is also shared with the same generation, created a common fashion language during the generation raised in the same period.
  • Memories, no matter direct or indirect, a big event or a small piece of life, still be remembered or even forgot, could be expressed in different perspectives, understanding and forms in fashion.

Memories in fashion reveal self-identity and reflect the personal growing experience, understand how memories use in fashion is also provide a way to create the new communication channel in fashion.
