Harmine Louwé

Lecturer

Harmine Louwé, graphic designer, lives and works in Amsterdam. She graduated from the St. Joost Art Academy in Breda in 1986, followed by a position at Studio Dumbar (1986-1992). Since then she has worked independently for clients which include government-related corporations, cultural institutes and independent artists. She has worked as an illustrator and freelance art director for Wieden & Kennedy and Kesselskramer, two leading advertising agencies in Amsterdam.

Whilst recognizing the dynamic of working with a creative director and copywriter, she is cautious about the possibilities of having design ideas compromised by the advertising machinery. She sees her involvement with advertising as an extension of her interpretative graphic work, assembling images on and off the screen in ways which have been described as 'techno-centric' (Eye).

Her working methodology is a personal and very intuitive process, seeing formal and semantic relevance in objects close-at-hand, melding her imagery, structures and typography. Harmines work has been published both in the Netherlands and internationally in for example 'Eye', 'Idea', 'Items' and 'Experience'.
