 To Seminar, conceptualized by MaHKU dean Henk Slager, is a research exhibition on the seminar as a model that offers an alternative for learning and knowledge transference. The aim of the exhibition is to break the associated deadlock of the so-called “educational turn” in art through a rethinking of philosopher Roland Barthes’ concept of “seminar.” A series of public gatherings—performances, talks, screenings, etc.—takes place in the course of this exhibition-as-seminar. Tiong Ang's new work 'UNIVERSALITY - DECORUM OF THOUGHT AND DESIRE' (2015), presented at the 1ST ASIA BIENNIAL / 5TH GUANGZHOU TRIENNIAL as a total installation, brings together a diversity of reflections and subjective perspectives on how contemporary living intersects between ideas of autonomy, intercultural traffic, formal and informal exchange and our collective comprehension of the material world and its representations.
