DARE #6 (2011): TEMPORARY AUTONOMOUS RESEARCH The Temporary Autonomous Research symposium started with a topological question: “When do we speak of artistic research?” Is research perhaps a temporary thing that can only take place within the experimental sanctuary created by the institutional framework of art education? A space that generates a temporary autonomy where purely artistic research can take place free from instrumental and / or calculating preconditions. A research environment that offers critical resistance to the one-dimensional rhetoric of the omnipresent visual culture and the opportunistic dictates of the creative industry. In short, a laboratory-like, speculative research environment that can function as a platform for a non- instrumentalizing, homogenizing iconography, or rather, as the critical conscience of today's art academy. DARE #5 (2010): DOING DISSEMINATION The Doing Dissemination symposium explored topical ways of communicating a work of art. What is the most effective way nowadays to communicate a work of art? It seems that art and design currently suffer from crossed channels. The possibilities to show, reveal, publish and promote are rapidly increasing, as are the considerations that come with this development. Does this openness and diversity lead to greater precision, attention, and dissemination? Or is there a tendency towards fragmentation, crudeness, socialization and commercialization? What do all these developments imply for the situation of (Graduate) art education? Presentations by Nicolas Bourriaud, Jurgen Bey, Bik Van der Pol, Geert Lovink, Wim Nijenhuis, Remko Scha. DARE #4 (2009): URBAN KNOWLEDGE The Urban Knowledge symposium investigated the specific perspectives Fine Art and Design deploy in order to understand and rethink our current urban environments and their complexities. Does a research-based attitude play a decisive role in such context responsive practice. What does Urban Knowledge mean for the current position of curatorial practice? And how can knowledge generated in this perspective be further specified? Introduction: Henk Slager. Moderators: Klaas Hoek and Mika Hannula. Presentations by: Jan-Erik Andersson, Adam Budak, Claire Doherty, Mika Hannula, Kobe Matthys and Huib Haye van der Werf. DARE#3 (2008): SPATIAL PRACTICES In recent years the term Spatial Practice has been established as a term to describe new forms of interdisciplinary (research) practices that are responding to the rapid transformations of the contemporary city and the politics of territorial relations. This symposium both describes the critical analysis of spatial relations, and various forms of interventionist strategies that are being devised by architects, artists, designers, urbanists and curators. Introductions by Henk Slager and Jeroen Boomgaard. Presentations by Apolonija Sustersic, Staffan Schmidt, Philipp Misselwitz, Doina Petrescu and Lukasz Stanek. DARE #2 (2007): THE POLITICS OF DESIGN The Politics of Design symposium looked at the role of design/designers with respect to the problems and issues that we face in the world today. In view of these issues, how can we define the role of a designer? Is design able to play a role in solving important environmental, social, and political problems in the world? Does a designer have to deal with both an artistic and social responsibility, and how can we define that responsibility? Introductions by Emily Pethick and Henk Slager. Presentations by Guus Beumer, Petra Blaisse, Hein Eberson, Hella Jongerius, Fiona Raby and Roemer van Toorn. Moderators: Annette W. Balkema, Henk Oosterling and Louise Schouwenberg. DARE # 1 (2006): CRITICAL METHODOLOGIES The Critical Methodologies symposium sought to profile some of the currently more complex and critical positions on the distinction between critical practices and practices limited to mediation of information. It aimed to highlight experimental and analytical modes of investigation connecting the fields of art and design to broader social and political arenas.
