  PROGRAMME

General
The 1st module (discourse production, collective for all MA students) will familiarize the students with reflections on topical design productions. Topics will be: to reflect methodologically, to formulate research hypotheses, to reflect on concepts, and to design research models.
As a continuation of a former BA-program, the discipline-specific programs in module 2 (Discipline related Research) offer a further deepening of relevant themes, discussions, and concepts, which are topical and prominent in the own discipline. Consequently, the outcome of the design practice will lie in a more flexible attitude: a designer, although working within a given discipline, is able to cross boundaries and insert outside elements for further reflection and dynamize his/her own professional field. That is exactly what is anticipated in module 3 (Individual Research): It is the module where you modify and realize independently the project proposal presented at the start of the program. The reflexive investigation should continuously demonstrate a dynamic interaction between theoretical concepts and design practice.
During module 4 (Presentation), you are involved in completing the research. The presentation and the public defence of the thesis form the completion of the program.

The collection
The aim of the first unit of module 2 (Discipline related Research) is to familiarize the student with the development of a conceptual viewpoint which will provide the foundation for the design process. The purpose of this is to enable the student to compare and assess at a later stage his/her own products and performance in relation to colleagues, the broader field, specialist literature, social and economical developments, and ethical debates and to place these issues in an intercultural and marketing perspective.
The student learns to critically look at his/her own culture or Western counterculture and to translate this into a modern fashion context. In addition, the student learns to critically reflect on the field and position him/herself in relation to this field. In so doing, the student should be stimulated to make a personal contribution to the development and innovation of the field.

The second unit of module 2 deals with the collection. A PR book should be produced which will serve as a means of communication both internally and externally, and which should show evidence of the social relevance of the practical and theoretical research carried out by the student. In the PR book, the student should provide a description of the concept behind his/her collection for third parties clients (for commissioned work) as well as customers (possible future wearers of the collection). The description should make clear to what extent the concept is innovative and should show the relevance of the research which has been carried out.
During this unit, work will be carried out on the collection plan. The student will experiment with form and detail in fabric and/or paper. These experiments will be applied in collages (drapings) on the body (of a mannequin). The collection plan shows what the collection is going to look like. The collection plan consists of design drawings "drawn on the body", including proposals for fabrics in which the design will be realized.
In this unit, also a workshop is held under the guidance of a professional stylist. The goal is to make a stylistic statement based on the collection. The students will be stimulated to comment on each other's collections and to offer stylistic suggestions.

During the third unit of module 2, work is carried out on the technical realisation of the test models of the designs. This is also the phase during which experimenting with fabric and print designs takes place. The drapings are further developed into a design. The patterns and prototypes are realized and analyses are made of the problems which can arise, after which solutions can be explored.
The student learns to carry out the production process of the final graduate collection both efficiently and according to a plan.
Moreover, the student learns to make a stylistic interpretation of the final collection in order to show this optimally in the form of a fashion show.

In the last unit of module 2, the practical final examination project becomes concrete and is brought into relationship with aspects such as styling and presentation in the form of a fashion show which is organized by the school. Moreover, the collection book will come up for consideration. The collection book is a two dimensional report of the collection and will make up an important part of the student's portfolio.
