Evi Renieri

I come from a society where people are confronted, in their social as well as in their personal environment, with phenomena such as oppression, psychological violence, discriminations and/or stereotypes. These social phenomena appear irrespectively the economical status, the political beliefs, the educational level and/or the ideology of the people involved.

There are theorists who suggest that these phenomena are caused because of the unbalance between the male and the female, because of the unbalance we create between nature and civilization.

I would like to research how the above social phenomena affect the development of personal and social identity and/or how personal and social identity would develop in a society where male and female elements function complementary.

My plan is to use videos, video stills as well as photos, drawings and objects to experiment and conduct the visual part of the research. Probably I will combine and arrange this material within one or more installations.I consider using different mediums to stimulate the senses of the audience. I wish to create an enigma in an attempt to cause various interpretations. My intention is to get the viewer acquainted with another perspective. I do not want to persuade anybody, I just want to make a suggestion, one among all the many others that might exist.

Technically I will conduct my research in two interactive parts, which will share a non-disciplinary character. In one part I will gather scientific, objective, general information on the subject of identity. For this part I plan to use material from the domain of humanistic and gender studies. On the other hand I will use this same material in an imaginative subjective way, which takes me to the more intuitive, visual part of the research. Here I will give my personal, singular interpretation on identity. This interpretation may be vague, irrational, experience based. It will leave space for accidents and may create accidental knowledge. Film and other artistic material referring to identity and/or gender issues will also be a source of knowledge and/or an artistic medium during the project.
