Gijs Frieling

Guest Lecturer
Gijs Frieling (1966) studied painting at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.

Frieling currently paints in tempora on canvas or on paper, producing life-size wall and ceiling murals. These colourful paintings are systematically constructed in rhythmical patterns with stylized flower motifs and animal figures. Frieling's working methods are methodical, following a previously and meticulously determined painterly technique. First he painted on walls because it was possible to work on a really large scale and to work on controversial, often religious topics. More recently he wants his murals to relate to the architecture of the space he makes them in.

Gijs is director of artspace W139 in Amsterdam.
